Sue Curry shares her work-in-progress of “Summer Refreshment”
Colorist Sue Curry shared her step-by-step progression of coloring this watermelon picture in the Creative Coloring Facebook group, and I thought it would be useful and informative to archive it here where it won’t get lost. Thank you, Sue, for documenting and sharing your coloring process. You sure know how to wield those Tombow markers! All comments are Sue’s from her original Facebook post. -SC
Sue Chastain has a new collection of pictures available on her website, entitled ‘Summer Delights.’ One of the most tempting pictures is this delightful drawing called ‘Summer Refreshment’. Watermelon is one of the most popular of the summer time refreshments for sure.
This is my second attempt at this picture. The first time, I got in a hurry and started laying down dark green and dark red too quickly. It left no room for me to bring out the details of this picture. This time, I want to start with the softer colors, like the bright green base and the pastel colors of the watermelon skin and rind.
I hope that you will enjoy the album as I try to bring out the delicious colors of real watermelon and bright hibiscus blooms.

Moving along very quickly with the help of my wonderful Tombow Paint markers which allow me to brush on those vines with a single, long stroke. In the meantime, I was informed that the flowers are NOT hibiscus blooms. They are watermelon blossoms. I was treating them like decorations at a Hawaiian luau. *lol*

The watermelon blossoms are done. Now, I need to do the foliage. I will save the ‘albino-like’ fruit for last. 🙂 Yes, it will look like normal watermelon. 🙂

I do love my Lime Sorbet BIC marker. That color is so perfect for a subtle foliage color. It doesn’t over-shadow the rest of the picture or other greens.

This is the finished picture of Sue Chastain’s drawing entitled ‘Summer Refreshments’ from her collection called ‘Summer Delights.’
